Tigers ready to kick off season

Junior running back Nathan Branco looks for an opening against East Union during a scrimmage on Friday August 18, 2017 (Mike Bush/News-Sentinel)

Josh Kirchner is coming home.

The Tokay High football player, a senior wide receiver and defensive back, played his first-ever game as a youth at Heritage High of Brentwood 11 years ago. Today at 7 p.m., Kirchner and Tokay open the season against Heritage. Tokay is one of two Lodi area prep squads opening the season, with Liberty Ranch being the other one.

“Pretty cool way to start the year for him,” said Tokay coach Michael Holst of Kirchner. “Now, he gets to play his final first high school football game this season.”

Tokay (4-6 last season) is looking to establish better memories against the Patriots (8-4 last season). In last year’s opener at the Grape Bowl, Heritage pounded Tokay 42-0.
